How far we've come. 2009 so far has seen an African American President, and now Johanna Sigurdardottir will become Icealnd's next Prime Minister and the first openly gay leader of a country. She will have her hands full dealing with the economic crisis, but I wish her best of luck in all of her endeavors.

Great! Holland is also quite gay-friendly in politics. We even had a right-wing politician, Pim Fortuyn, who was very openly gay. Unfortunately he got shot to death right before elections in 2002. Fortuyn's party (which he started) was gaining popular support, and some left-wing nutto felt the need to off him. Sheesh. (I didn't share Fortuyn's views on immigration et al, but he certainly had the right to express them without fearing for his life.)
ReplyDeleteIt's quite wonderful, after growing up in the US, to live in a society where being gay is like having brown hair: some people are, some aren't, big deal.
